    Julia is One!

Julianna is one year old today!  Hard to believe it was a year ago that her Daddy had to catch her in the bathroom. She is still a little nursing piglet.  She wears a size 5 shoe.  Her favorite game is peek-a-boo, and her favorite toy is a ball.  Her favorite food ...

    The Healthy Indian Diet

I've been more and more interested in trying and making Indian food lately.  I make Mark Bittman's dal and even the neighbor kids like it.  But I don't know much about the cuisine and all of the recipes I've cooked actually come from old white guys (Bittman, and Andrew Weil.) Indian ...

Decreasing Disposables

by Milehimama on January 13, 2010

in Recession Proof Routine, works for me wednesday

Are you trying to decrease your disposables with the Kitchen Steward?  Or maybe it just pains your cheap soul to throw anything away.

Then why are you using aluminum foil?

If you need to cover a dish in the oven, use reusable aluminum.  No, I’m not talking about washing and saving your Reynold’s wrap.  I’m talking about your cookie sheets!  They’re large enough to cover almost any size casserole dish or roasting pan, and a perfect solution for covering lasagnas, casseroles, chicken legs, and more.

Use what you have and save money!

I’ve been luxuriating in wastefulness when it comes to aluminum foil. On a recent trip to a local food bank, the lady who runs it gave me a case of aluminum foil, a dozen 200′ rolls!

I used to wash and dry my heavy duty foil and re-use it, but I will admit that lately I have been lining pans with abandon!

That’s a LOT of aluminum foil, LOL!

I have decided I like lining my pans with parchment far more than aluminum foil. Depending on what you use it for you can use it multiple times and when it’s had it, it can go into the recycle bin!

Good point! And for covering smaller containers, you can use an upside-down plate. Usually you don’t even have to wash the cover afterward, just stick it in the dish drainer until the condensation evaporates.

Here’s some inspiration for decreasing disposables.

Denver Recycling program accepts used aluminum foil- I never feel guilty using it because it always ends up in the purple bin.
