Memorial Day: 64 Years

A rerun from my old blog, but especially appropriate for today.

Many of my family members served their country, and the cause of freedom, during World War II.

Many were lost.

One was lost to us.

“Uncle Buddy”, as he was known, was shot down by Nazis, taken prisoner, and killed by the enemy. His B-17 was lost during an air battle over Dresden, Germany on Valentine’s Day, 1945. He was a ball turret gunner. The plane eventually crashed near the village of Hridelec in the Czech Republic, about 130 km from Prague. His grave is in Epinal, France, although he has a memorial in a Texas cemetery, near his hometown.  He left behind a fiancee.

He died over 30 years before I was born, yet I know his story. He is still loved, remembered, missed.

Eternal rest grant him, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace, amen.
