    Julia is One!

Julianna is one year old today!  Hard to believe it was a year ago that her Daddy had to catch her in the bathroom. She is still a little nursing piglet.  She wears a size 5 shoe.  Her favorite game is peek-a-boo, and her favorite toy is a ball.  Her favorite food ...

    How To Clean a Whiteboard

Last year, we moved our school room from the little office/den to the family room.  When we ditched the office, we ditched the white board. A year later, I finally got a clue and realized that I could reclaim this space for a home office instead of wasting it on mere ...

    The Healthy Indian Diet

I've been more and more interested in trying and making Indian food lately.  I make Mark Bittman's dal and even the neighbor kids like it.  But I don't know much about the cuisine and all of the recipes I've cooked actually come from old white guys (Bittman, and Andrew Weil.) Indian ...

    Christmas Gifts for Active Kids

It's time for toy shopping. I'm not a big fan of toys that do only one thing, make a lot of electronic noises, and limit the imagination.  I want toys that inspire the mind and encourage the kids to be active; open ended toys that can be played with by children ...

Politics and Pests: 7 Quick Takes

by Milehimama on May 15, 2009

in Mama Says Randomness,Prolife

Jen at Conversion Diary invites bloggers to post 7 pieces of randomness on Friday.

If there’s one thing I never run out of, it’s randomness!  And y’all just know I’ve got a bunch of political junk to get out of my system.

1.

Keep your eye on “comparative effectiveness”.  Basically, it’s cost effectiveness applied to healthcare.  Nancy “I was told but not briefed” Pelosi has promised comprehensive health care reform.  This week, the House Finance committee heard testimony from experts who say that old people use too many resources and the “delivery system” will just have to get bundled payments and deal with them.  That “delivery system” means your doctor, your nurses, your hospital.

Keep in mind – this man and this beautiful baby probably wouldn’t pass the cost-effective test.

2.

Don’t worry, though.  President “no new taxes” Obama is going to pay for healthcare by taxing Cokes.  And possibly extorting FDA fregulation fees out of Cheerios, which the FDA now says should be classified as a drug.  (H/T The Common Room)

3.

A handy prayer, especially for bloggers.

4.

If anyone wants to know why so many Catholics think it is abominable to honor Obama with an honorary degree, here are a few reasons.

5.

The boys have expanded their vermin collection to include arachnids.  They found this guy while making the Think! Earth Homes.

That's a quarter in the bottom of the jar - this guy is big!

Rabidosa Rapida

It’s a Pecan Spider – also known as Rabidosa rabida, a type of wolf spider.

6.

Yeah, I’ve got even more Obama junk to get off my chest.  This Notre Dame thing is a Very. Big. Deal.  Now the White House has issued a statement saying “only one” group is protesting Obama’s speech.

Not quite true. There is a group of 11 prolife organizations that have banded together under one name.  The Prolife Action League is involved.  Alan Keyes and Randall Terry got themselves arrested with their appalling display.  groups are coming from Detroit, Iowa, and Illinois.  Fr. Pavone, of Priests for Life, is holding an alternative prayer ceremony during O’s talk.  The winner of the Laetare Medal has declined to accept it since she was being used as part of the Obama talking points.  66 bishops and 4 cardinals have issued statements decrying the speech.  And it turns out that Notre Dame’s board of directors have ties to Obama.  Scandal, controversy, brouhaha… does it matter what they call it?

7.

Nadja asked for a belly shot.  I really, really hate the way I look in profile, but the chances of my being able to lay my hands on the camera and the bathroom mirror being clean again are slim to none.  So, here’s 36 weeks!  Believe it or not, I’ve only gained 12 pounds this pregnancy.  Not that I started out overly thin…

Having a child with CP I am really worried and upset by the proposed health care system. Taxing cokes? Has he lost his mind?

I think you look so pretty in your picture! Your belly is just beautiful!

You look great!

My husband and I were talking about “universal health care” and I said that it was going to turn into China. The system would pay to abort a disabled child but not to give birth to him. And no way would you be able to have fertility treatments after the second child, or probably after the first. And “fertility treatments” would include drugs necessary to keep an unborn child alive. I am glad I have another reason to take at least one of my drugs. And how long before your third child (and beyond) was not eligible for medical insurance? Or you had to pay in advance for their lifetime costs–like in China (the parts where they don’t force abortion outright)?

My husband hopes I am paranoid. I do too.

And I can’t wait for my daughter to be old enough to catch critters! Right now her prefered method is charging at them screaming, which works on cats, but probably not snakes… we don’t have a bayou, but we have a river and woods and a swamp. And one of these days I’ll get me some rubber boots.

You look really, really good!!
