GM announced they’ll be closing 25% of their dealerships – 800, actually, employing 40,000 people. Now GM is closing 1100 GM dealerships.
These are not unprofitable dealerships. They’re franchises. Some have been in business for generations –
30, 40, even 60 years.
GM is “consolidating” – giving the small business’ clients to bigger dealerships up the road, without compensation.
Even worse, no one is revealing why these small business owners are having their legacy taken from them. It’s arbitrary – there is no official criteria. Many of the dealerships are the only ones in their small towns, or are profitable and successful at selling GM cars.
Rumors are snaking about, too, that a disproportionate number of dealerships with politically active Republican owners are being shuttered with no explanation. The statistics are still being processed to see if there is a trend to either shut down conservative dealers, or to reward Democratic donors by closing their competition. It’s all just speculation, right now, but the numbers do seem compelling.
Then again, I barely scraped through my statistics and analysis class, despite liking math, so what do I know?
