    Julia is One!

Julianna is one year old today!  Hard to believe it was a year ago that her Daddy had to catch her in the bathroom. She is still a little nursing piglet.  She wears a size 5 shoe.  Her favorite game is peek-a-boo, and her favorite toy is a ball.  Her favorite food ...

    The Healthy Indian Diet

I've been more and more interested in trying and making Indian food lately.  I make Mark Bittman's dal and even the neighbor kids like it.  But I don't know much about the cuisine and all of the recipes I've cooked actually come from old white guys (Bittman, and Andrew Weil.) Indian ...

    Christmas Gifts for Active Kids

It's time for toy shopping. I'm not a big fan of toys that do only one thing, make a lot of electronic noises, and limit the imagination.  I want toys that inspire the mind and encourage the kids to be active; open ended toys that can be played with by children ...

Real Food Stamp Challenge, week 1

by Milehimama on February 1, 2010

in Food Stamp Challenge,Real Food

We are moving to a more natural, real food diet.  We are also on WIC and food stamps (in Texas, if you qualify for SNAP aka food stamps, you are automatically qualified for WIC if you are pregnant or have children under the age of 5).  I’ll be blogging how we make the change on a limited budget.

Can you eat healthful foods on a food stamp budget?  YES!  You can.  Last year our family ate fresh fruits, veggies, and whole grains on an average of $1.60 per person, per day.  What about a real food diet, emphasizing local foods, organics, and meat raised the old fashioned way, without antibiotics and hormones?  We shall see!  (My priorities are here.  Michael Pollan has some good food rules, too.)

As always, I appreciate advice and pointers.  I am by no means an expert.  In fact, I am by all accounts seat-of-your-pants-oh-well kinda person.

We receive WIC for a nursing baby (those 95 jars of baby food…) and two children.  This includes cheese, milk, whole wheat bread, peanut butter, and dried beans.  We also receive $662 per month in food stamp benefits.

My husband’s on the Atkins diet, which means I’ll be buying some things that are not food.  Like Diet Cherry Dr. Pepper.  He’s a  big boy and can decide what he wants to eat.

Even though this

is how I feel about artificial sweeteners.

I’ve joined The Nourished Kitchen’s 28 Day challenge, along with five or six hundred other people.  Holy cow, I’m part of a fad.  I’m one of the cool kids!  Squee!

Is anyone else making changes in their diets this year?

My challenge this year is eating healthier while not losing *too* much weight. I generally lose 25-30 lbs in the first trimester of pregnancy. So if I were to weigh what the “charts” say I should weigh, and then get pregnant and lose that much weight I wouldn’t weigh enough to support a healthy pregnancy.

My husband’s “rules” for us: All whole-grain pasta and bread and no HFCS.
