So, once again receipts are all over the place. I’ve fallen into the “only coupla things” trap, running to the store for one or two items instead of keeping a list and doing it all at once. Not the best strategy, especially if I end up going late at night when I’m bored and tired. An insane amount of junk food was bought this week.
Some people drink when stressed. I entertain my best buddy, Little Debbie.
So, I spent (on food): $60.88
I got:
8# bananas, 3# apples, 2 cucumbers, 3 bell peppers, 4 oranges, 3 large apples, 4 nectarines, 1# tomatoes, 2 heads lettuce, 3 avocados, 2# frozen green beans
3 gallons milk, 16 oz. sour cream, 2 chickens, 2 pkgs hotdogs, 2 cans tuna
2 pkg. hot dog buns, 5 loaves whole wheat bread, 16 sesame hamburger buns, 8# white rice
Large bag MoM cereal, 1 box swiss cake rolls, cookies, popsicles, and a box of vanilla wafers.
We’re eating:
Sunday, Oct. 4: pork roast, left over baked potatoes, broccoli
Monday, Oct. 5: red beans and rice w/ bell peppers and leftover pork roast.
Tuesday, Oct. 6: Grilled cheese sandwiches, tomato soup
Wednesday, Oct. 7: Lentil enchiladas, refried beans
Thursday, Oct. 8: Garlic chicken legs, peas and carrots, rice
Friday, Oct. 9: Black bean soup (w/carrots, onions, green chiles, and tomatoes), tortillas
Saturday, Oct. 10: Dirty rice w/ peas
I am so glad I stocked up on a crazy amount of cheese when Kroger had their 10/$10 sale! A little cheese makes everything taste better.

That lentil enchilada recipe looks delicious- I have all the stuff and will try it tonight!
Where do I find the recipes you are using? We just went on food stamps and are getting $205 for the month. It is not going to be easy. I am on SS and that just pays our bills. Thank God for that though. DH is trying to find work but being in construction and at his age, it is not easy to find.
I hate to say it, but most of his work is being done by those who are willing to undercut all the workers around here and work for next to nothing. They can do it because they live ten to a room but the locals cannot feed a family on that so they job goes to the illegals. We are not bitter about it, they have to live too but it does seem unfair.
Hi Eve,
My husband has been pink slipped and replaced by workers from Mexico who barely speak English and worked under fake names (I don’t KNOW that they were illegal, but I know the other things for a fact.) He’s in construction. One of his friends was named Miguel – Miguel got called into the office, because Miguel’s SS# was flagged for wage garnishment for child support. The next Monday, Miguel was working in a different department under the name of Jesus.
Anyway. Most of the recipes I use I kind of make up. We don’t eat meat every night. The library had some good vegetarian cookbooks, and I also really like Cheap Healthy Good. Hillbilly Housewife also has menus for tight budgets, including a $45 a week budget.

I’m happy to share any recipes I have or answer any questions – just let me know if there’s something you want to know about my menus!
