    The Healthy Indian Diet

I've been more and more interested in trying and making Indian food lately.  I make Mark Bittman's dal and even the neighbor kids like it.  But I don't know much about the cuisine and all of the recipes I've cooked actually come from old white guys (Bittman, and Andrew Weil.) Indian ...

    Christmas Gifts for Active Kids

It's time for toy shopping. I'm not a big fan of toys that do only one thing, make a lot of electronic noises, and limit the imagination.  I want toys that inspire the mind and encourage the kids to be active; open ended toys that can be played with by children ...

Food Stamp Challenge week 27

by Milehimama on July 6, 2009

in Food Stamp Challenge

We don’t have a car this week, but my sister went out of town and generously loaned us her vehicle.  Still, I had to send husband dear to shop.  I also totally blew the budget this week, as I tried to stock up in case it’s a while before we can get to the store again.  I fully expect our next week’s spending to be fairly low, since I bought 10 gallons of milk, 10 pounds of oatmeal, and 9 dozen eggs this week!  We do have a grocery store within walking distance but carting home food for 10 people would be a challenge.

I also bought 10 bottles of Gatorade, since husband dear will probably be riding his bike to work at some point this week until we get the car fixed.  It’s been over 100 degrees for days now, so I hope he doesn’t have to do that for too long!

We spent: $195.85 (June 28-July 4)

Weekly average this year: $126.01

We got:

2# cherries, 9# bananas, 4# nectarines, 3# apples, 6 mangoes, 3.7# plums, 2.5# tomatoes, 5# carrots, 4# strawberries, 30 limes, 1/2# jalapenos, 1 bunch cilantro, 2 poblanos, 4.5# zucchini, 5 artichokes, 10# frozen veggies

5 loaves bread, 2 pkg. hot dog buns, 5 boxes cereal, 10.5# oatmeal, 100 corn tortillas, 32 oz. baking soda, 2 McCormick GrillMates, 2 oz. oregano

10 gallons milk, 9 dozen eggs, 16 oz. sour cream, 38 oz. sliced cheese, 1 pkg pepperoni, 23# boneless beef brisket,  12 oz meat, 2 pkg. hot dogs,

200 tea bags, 6 cans Ranch style beans, 6 cans hominy, 1 large can menudo, 3# barley, 2# white beans, 12 oz. sweet relish, 1 jar Kraft olive oil mayo, 3 jars Ragu, 1 an sauerkraut

12 pk. nutty bars, 24 oz. pancake syrup, 2 bags tortilla chips, 6 candy bars, 2 boxes granola bars, 1 liter Coke, 1 energy drink, 14# ice

We’re eating:

Saturday, July 4 – hotdogs, coleslaw, chips and pico, strawberries

Sunday, July 5 – gingered beef (crockpot), mashed potatoes, green beans

Monday, July 6 – pasta salad (olives, white beans, green beans), artichokes

Tuesday, July 7 – pork w/ pineapple salsa, rice, zucchini, barley pilaf

Wednesday, July 8 – swiss steak (crockpot), rice

Thursday, July 9 – pizza skillet meal (homemade hamburger helper), veggies

Friday, July 10 – black beans and rice, fried tortillas, hominy

Wow! I’ll keep praying about your car situation. We’ve been there and it is NOT easy.

I so understand over spending at the grocery store. We spent over our $300 biweekly food budget. But I didn’t spend that much the prior 2 weeks.
I pray that your car situation is resolved soon.
