    The Healthy Indian Diet

I've been more and more interested in trying and making Indian food lately.  I make Mark Bittman's dal and even the neighbor kids like it.  But I don't know much about the cuisine and all of the recipes I've cooked actually come from old white guys (Bittman, and Andrew Weil.) Indian ...

    Christmas Gifts for Active Kids

It's time for toy shopping. I'm not a big fan of toys that do only one thing, make a lot of electronic noises, and limit the imagination.  I want toys that inspire the mind and encourage the kids to be active; open ended toys that can be played with by children ...

Food Stamp Challenge week 19

by Milehimama on May 11, 2009

in Food Stamp Challenge

This week I hit the 99 cent store and what a deal!  I got 4 loaves of Sara Lee whole wheat bread for $1 each, plus some little treats for the kids to smooth the bumps when the new baby comes.  Back to Nature organic crackers were in stock, there, too!  Crackers that Mr R can eat are hard to find, because we don’t eat BHA/BHT/TBHQ.

I spent (food only) $17 at the 99 Cent Store, $23.57 at FiestaMart, $24.83 at HEB, $54.28 at WalMart, and $16.17 at Kroger.

Total spent this week:

(May 4-May 10) = $135.85

Total spent this year: $2331.09
Average weekly spent: $122.74

What I got:

4 loaves ww bread (24 oz.), 4 boxes whole wheat spaghetti,  2 boxes Pioneer pancake mix, 84 oz. oatmeal, 1 box chocolate cake mix, 2 bags tortilla chips, 2 boxes frosted Mini Wheats.

4# Italian sausage, 2 gallons milk, cheese.

2 jars spaghetti sauce, 4 cans crushed tomatoes (28 oz.), 3 cans diced tomatoes (28 oz.), 2 cans petite diced tomatoes (14.5 oz.), 3 cans black olives, 2 bottles worcestershire sauce, 3 jars peanut butter (40 oz.), 3 jars grape jam, 1 gallon pickles, 1 jar salsa (24 oz.), large can Folger’s coffee, 2 boxes berry flavored tea.

2 heads romaine lettuce, 2# calabacita,1 3/4# yellow squash, 1 1/4# eggplant, 5 lemons, 4 bunches green onions, 2 bunches radishes, 6 ears fresh corn, 3 3/4# tomatoes on the vine, 1 3/4# jalapenos, 5# red potatoes, 1 honeydew, 1 cantaloupe, 1 large watermelon, 15 oranges, 12 kiwis, 4# strawberries, 3 pts. raspberries, 4 artichokes.

Box of Capri Suns (kids went shopping, too, and our van has no AC), 1 bottle water (for me), 20 oz. bottle Pepsi and a turkey leg for husband dear, 10 pkg. Handisnacks type snack, 2 boxes organic triscuit type crackers, 10 pcs. fruit leather kid snack, and fun size candy bars.  (I ate those.)

mpm8-1

What we’re eating:

Sunday: Spaghetti w/sausage and peppers, salad, artichokes

Monday: Grilled pork chops, corn, summer salad

Tuesday: Dirty rice with gd. beef and veggies

Wednesday: Ratatouille w/ white beans and ww noodles

Thursday: Crockpot Roast, roasted red potatoes, carrots, and onion

Friday: Tostadas  (beans, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, peppers), jalapeno poppers

Saturday: leftovers, pizza (homemade; husband and I don’t see eye to eye on Papa Johns vs. Dominos vs. cheapie Little Caesar’s), or possibly dinner out (kids eat free at Denny’s!)

I didn’t plan our lunches day by day.  In general, we have pasta with cheese and veggies, taco beans and rice, peanut butter sandwiches, or leftovers.  Snacks are almost always fruit, and the children usually eat a piece of fruit with their breakfast.

Great work!

We did okay for our first week. We had a terribly busy weekend with our niece getting married and everything so I haven’t really had time to sit down and blog much… Maybe things will settle down a bit now. ;)
