I stopped covering Reality TV on the web, but still wanted to make a little money writing online. I like writing, I can do it from home, and I don’t have to hire a babysitter. (Although I do my paid work when husband is home and/or after the kids go to bed.)
I joined Examiner.com at the beginning of the month and I really like it.
Examiner.com assigns people topics in their city. I’ve linked to articles I’ve written over there before. I am the Houston Homeschool Examiner.
There aren’t a lot of editorial guidelines for articles, and you can cover what you please within your topic. My editor has a calendar with daily suggestions for articles if you’re stuck. The pay is based on page views. You’ll be a freelancer, not an employee with a salary. Basically, you’re sharing ad revenues. If you blog regularly, you probably have the skills to be an Examiner citizen journalist.
I’ve looked at other SEO sites, written for Associated Content, and sold some articles to SEO content companies. I like Examiner.com (that’s why I’m writing about them and not the other sites!) The only downside (for me) is that the company pays by PayPal; on the other hand, I’m not waiting for a paper check like I do for my other articles.
They are having a referral contest, with special prizes for Examiners who sign up the most people. If you’d like to give Examiner a try, please use my name: Lisa Stauber and/or my Examiner number, 18093 on your application! And drop me a line and let me know what site you applied for!
You will need a writing sample on your chosen topic when you apply, so if you don’t have one tweak a blog post or type one up before going to fill out the app.
I have a business relationship with Examiner.com and they do give out bonuses if I refer people (if you use my number, 18093, and name, Lisa Stauber.) But I hope you know I wouldn’t recommend it on my blog if I wasn’t pleased so far!

we are looking for some ways to start supplementing our income. This may be a great way to start.
Does it matter what you right about, like is it certain topics, or local interest?
You have to apply to write about a certain topic, i.e., homeschooling, local restaurants, local sports team, a television show, etc. There’s a pretty big list.
Thanks for the tip, if I wind up going that way or sending anyone else I’ll definitely “credit” you.
