I went to my first homeschool conference this weekend and had a great time! There was a curriculum hall with waaayyy too many book tables (natch) and some really good talks, including a nun who presented the Montessori method for teaching reading (the first time I’d seen them presented in person), a priest talking about fostering sanctity in our children, and the lovely Danielle Bean. I bought her book at the conference and even though I’m only a few chapters in, I find myself saying “Yes, yes, yes!” Her family and her mothering style seem so much like mine.
A highlight was being able to have lunch with my “fake friends” and meet some other mommybloggers in person. I had a great time with Jen, Dawn, Danielle, Marian, Colleen, and a new friend, X. Our talk ranged from profound (to me, at least) insights on the personhood of the Trinity to how do our husbands handle negative comments on our blogs. Fun!
Another thing I learned at the conference is, if you get in an elevator on the first floor, then repeatedly press the “1″ button, you will not go up. Until you figure it out and press the button for the second floor. I think I need more sleep.
How do YOUR husbands handle negative comments on your blog, Facebook page, Twitterstream, etc.?
(P.S., Jen, here’s that blog post we talked about from J.A. Konrath. There’s more in the archives of his site!)

I haven’t gotten any negative comments yet. I had one lady tell me I needed to make my blog posts shorter, that ppl don’t want to read long blog posts, but she wasn’t rude about it. If I did get rude comments I doubt my husband would care. He would probably never even know b/c he doesn’t read my blog.
Sounds like a success all around. Meeting fake friends is the best. I did that yesterday too when a fake friend met through Flickr came over to take ownership of some of my flowers. It was a wonderful afternoon of talking and hanging out and digging up flowers and talking about the last year of online friendship. I really wish I could meet all my fake friends in person.
It really was such a nice afternoon and such stimulating conversation with genuine, articulate, intelligent women. I am so happy to have met you in person!
I’m so jealous you met Jen!
Too bad we didn’t get to meet and I missed out on the blogger lunch! I was visiting with that little crowd right before lunch, and recall someone pointing you out across the room, but must have just missed you. I do remember your sweet baby in Sister’s talk (she was so tiny to be walking!). Maybe we’ll meet one of these days. Not sure if you’re in town, but I’m on the far north side.
And as for your question, I haven’t yet been controversial or popular enough to get negative comments, but I have gotten roughed up by debates on a message board. He always laughs and tells me to not take things so seriously and over analyze silly mommy talk.
It was so great to meet you guys! And thanks for that link. I’m excited to check it out. Hope to meet again one of these days!
This is a nice blog. Don’t worry about the lengths of your posts. I own about 50 blogs on different subjects and sometimes the posts can run up to 1500 words, especially on my legal site.
You need to stick to keywords that have a lot of search volume on your topic… in your Title Tags if you want more readers. Great work!
