6 Reasons Moms Need Business Cards

I have business cards, and boy, do they come in handy.  How?  Here's some of the ways I use my cards. 1. Give them to other moms.  How often have you scrambled for a scrap of paper to write down your phone number for a mother of your child's classmate or ...

    The Healthy Indian Diet

I've been more and more interested in trying and making Indian food lately.  I make Mark Bittman's dal and even the neighbor kids like it.  But I don't know much about the cuisine and all of the recipes I've cooked actually come from old white guys (Bittman, and Andrew Weil.) Indian ...

    Christmas Gifts for Active Kids

It's time for toy shopping. I'm not a big fan of toys that do only one thing, make a lot of electronic noises, and limit the imagination.  I want toys that inspire the mind and encourage the kids to be active; open ended toys that can be played with by children ...

7 Quick Takes

by Milehimama on July 17, 2009

in Baby A,Mama Says Randomness,Mr X

1.

Mr X is back to speech therapy.  He’s really come into his own this last month, and is much more confident since the baby has arrived!  He talks up a storm – or at least makes noises.  He’s started putting words together and answering in sentences, of sorts.  If you ask, “is this a banana?” (while holding an apple) he’ll say, “No, pul.”  (He still just says half of words – “pul” is how he says apple (ap-pul).

2.

Nylon heavy duty binder pouches are a DIME at WalMart this week!  I’ve been wanting to get several for quite a while, ever since I saw “Preschool activities in a bag”.  I bought 30, and might go back for more!  Walmart also has 5 packs of plastic shoeboxes for $3.50.

I have quite a few drawers that I keep supplies in, such as Unifix cubes, Cuisenaire rods, fraction circles, stencils.  Still working out how to organize and integrate everything.

3.

Baby Alli had her renal ultrasound, and everything looks fine.  So far there is no cause for her high blood pressure – her chest x-ray showed no issues, her bloodwork is fine, her urinalysis was normal.  And did I mention she’s fat and healthy?

4.

Big controversy in Houston.  Raging Elephants paid for a billboard that said “Martin Luther King, Jr. was a Republican”.  Which, he was.  The Republicans were actually the ones behind civil rights legislation in the 60s… and abolition in the 1860s.  But our local Al Sharpton wannabe pressured the advertising company to take it down.  (Let’s remember, Houston is home to Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, the one who wants Congress to officially honor Michael Jackson).  However, jokes on him, because Drudge and Fox picked up the story.

BTW-  Quanell X is a local nut who encourages racial hatred and violence.

5.

I’ve decided not to return to my reality TV writing job, so I’m looking for other online opportunities.

One guy wanted someone to collaborate on a script.  But he decided to reveal the story only in small pieces.  His explanation?  Books are read one chapter at a time, and movies are watched from beginning to end.  So the writer only needs to know a tiny bit at a time.

(Except for the whole scene pacing, character development, and act set ups.  You can’t write a character’s arc or journey without knowing where he’s going, and how it’s going to end!)

Next job posting I saw:

Job Title:
Writer

Job Responsibilities:
Reporting to the facility designated Manager, inspects vehicles for damage, missing parts, and mechanical problems upon arrival at the auction. Complete required inspection paperwork promptly and accurately.

I guess they have a different definition of “writer” than I do!  Why do queries take so long to get a response?

6.

Health Rations And You – watch this!

And does anyone know why WordPress won’t let me embed YouTubes?

7.

The above is tongue in cheek, but I fear that it is coming.  Where is NARAL and the feminists on healthcare reform, anyway?  Isn’t their TAGLINE about how government shouldn’t come between you and your doctor?

What if it’s determined in the future that 8th babies shouldn’t exist, and don’t qualify for the free plan?  Who would pay for Alli’s renal scan, then?  Don’t think that could happen?

What of Obama’s science czar, who recommended sterilizing men through the water supply?  When did we start the era of Czarist America, anyway?

Why won’t our legislators READ THE BILLS they are voted on?  Why won’t Obama keep his promise about transparency in the White House, and the promise that all bills will be made public 5 days before a vote?  They’re not even giving the bills to the Congressmen who are voting on them!

Sorry, the last one wasn’t a Quick Take, but more of a brain dump on the state of affairs in our country.  I really do see a day coming – in my lifetime- where if you are not immediately useful and contributing to the GDP you will be deemed worthless.  A day when every life has a price tag attached – by the Feds.

#6 didn’t post right. All I see is the HTML, I think! LOL. I am not very computer literate. But it looks like there should be a video clip?

Milehimama July 17, 2009 at 11:25 am

doh, it’s supposed to be a YouTube! I’ll see if I can fix it.

Nice to hear about Mr X.
I seem to remember your troll ( the one with a ‘background’ in nutrition) chastising you for jeopardising his progress by having another baby.

Very interesting about Martin L King Jr. i didn’t know that.

I agree about it taking so long to get answers for queries. I don’t know why, either though.

For Youtube, click on the HTML tab on the add new post page and then copy and paste the embed youtube video code into that. Thats how I do it for some of my gigs.

Is this a Wordpress blog?
I was able to embed a youtube on mine, but got frustrated that it wouldn’t let me have a baby ticker in the margin.
Blogger seems simpler to use. Now i have a baby ticker AND a Pope.
I is WELL cafflick!

You’re scaring me with that number 7 stuff. I’ve been really worrying about it lately, and your statements are put in a much more intelligent way than my rambling thoughts. Yikes – about it all.

Yea for Mr. X! It’s great that he is starting to use more words (or even half words)!
