    Julia is One!

Julianna is one year old today!  Hard to believe it was a year ago that her Daddy had to catch her in the bathroom. She is still a little nursing piglet.  She wears a size 5 shoe.  Her favorite game is peek-a-boo, and her favorite toy is a ball.  Her favorite food ...

    How To Clean a Whiteboard

Last year, we moved our school room from the little office/den to the family room.  When we ditched the office, we ditched the white board. A year later, I finally got a clue and realized that I could reclaim this space for a home office instead of wasting it on mere ...

    The Healthy Indian Diet

I've been more and more interested in trying and making Indian food lately.  I make Mark Bittman's dal and even the neighbor kids like it.  But I don't know much about the cuisine and all of the recipes I've cooked actually come from old white guys (Bittman, and Andrew Weil.) Indian ...

    Christmas Gifts for Active Kids

It's time for toy shopping. I'm not a big fan of toys that do only one thing, make a lot of electronic noises, and limit the imagination.  I want toys that inspire the mind and encourage the kids to be active; open ended toys that can be played with by children ...

7 Quick Takes vol. 23

by Milehimama on July 8, 2010

in 7 Quick Takes,Mama Says Randomness

1.

Remember those oleander bushes? I never did get around to digging them up, but our spring frost killed off a lot of branches. I’ve trimmed a few of them, and they are amazingly resilient, but it’s slow going. A couple of weeks ago I headed out to tackle yet another bush that I think is actually dead, and was amazed at what I found growing in the brown branches.

A passion fruit vine has taken over!

2.

I’m so excited because there are at least 20 fruits ripening! I’ve never had passion fruit by itself, just as a part of commercial juice blends. We’re zone 9, borderline tropical climate so yeah, we’ve got wild passion fruit!

3.

I won a giftcard from my friend Lerin’s blog, Beautiful Chaos.  I bought a dehydrator, even though I secretly drooled after the stainless steel mandolin.  Husband dear will be so happy!  He’s mentioned it maybe 3000 times in the last decade.  He’s a beef jerky aficionado so I think he’ll have a blast experimenting.

4.

Got any beef jerky recipes, hints, or tricks?

5.

I call him Husband Dear on this blog for a specific reason.  Once he saw me type “DH”, referring to him in standard blog lingo.  He, however, thought it meant “D*mn Husband and then wanted to know what he did wrong.

6.

A friend’s son drowned last week after hitting his head, but paramedics revived him and I just got word that he is off the venitalor and even talking a bit!  Wonderful news.

Which brings me to this must read article.

Drowning Doesn’t Look Like Drowning

7.

In other news, 66,000 pounds of bison have been recalled.  We actually eat a lot of bison, because it’s raised without hormones or antibiotics and it’s cheaper than grassfed beef.   I can’t tell a difference from ground beef, actually.  Check your freezers, e. coli is nothing to mess with especially if you have young ones.

#1- It is worth the takeover just to see those awesome looking blossoms. I have never seen one before and they are cool.

#5 – HHBL didn’t like me referring to him as “DH” either. Hence HHBL.

I enjoyed this post at Health, Home, Happiness about a month ago about making jerky in a dehydrator. I haven’t tried it though.

#6: My mother was just telling me about that story of the child drowning this week. I had no idea about the physiology of drowning. Thanks for passing on the info!

Well THAT pic is from Wikipedia, LOL!

And today I found ANOTHER passion fruit vine full of fruit on another bush!

I really hope we like passion fruit.
