7 Quick Takes #2

in Mama Says Randomness

I’m loving this car review of the new Honda hybrid!  H/T The Common Room.

2.

I’m a total hypocrite.  I’ve been eating Chocolate Captain Crunch for breakfast while the kids eat oatmeal.  Mama’s entitled to special privileges, isn’t she?

3.

The story coming out of Ireland is simply heartbreaking.  There are no words.  So many people, both ecclesiastical and civil, failed these poor children!  Interestingly, the only discipline method that has been endorsed by a pope is non-corporal, the Method of St. John Bosco.  He ran a school for wayward boys – the kind that ran in gangs and lived on the street.  Mother Teresa was so right – the world is dying for lack of love.

4.

Our chard continues to produce, and produce some more!  We made a square foot garden, and I planted 1 square.  I didn’t know that multiple plants will grow from one seed!  I’ve expanded it to 2 squares, and we still have more than we can eat (well, we don’t eat it every day, either).  I never had chard before, but it’s a lot like spinach and a little bit like kale.  The kids like to eat the red stems like celery, and it will turn your onions pink when you cook them!

swiss chard

5.

After trying several methods, I found a tried and true method of controlling fire ants organically.  Boiling water is the only method that has worked so far to kill the ants and keep them away.  I had to do it twice for a particularly large pile.  The downside is that it will kill grass and plants, so it can only be used in a bare garden bed or on sidewalks and driveways.  In South Carolina, I had good luck using Equal sweetener, but it’s just not enough for Texas ants!

6.

Tomorrow is my 12th anniversary.  Our plans?  Stop procrastinating and work on the to-do list!  It just grows longer and longer every day, and a lot of things have to get done before the baby is born!

7.

We cannot decide on a name for the baby.  I like weird old lady names old fashioned names but husband dear likes trendy names.  And around and around we go.  Mostly it goes like this:  Mama says 3000 different names, husband says no.

Happy Anniversary!

And, yes, Mama is definitely entitled to special privileges!

Milehi…

There are a few hybrid names that are both old fashioned and trendy… Emma, for instance, was off the charts for YEARS, but now is at #1. Lydia, Sophie etc are pretty high on the list, too. (sideline rambling, but I’m going to take a wild guess that Jennifer was #1 when I was born. I know a million Jennifers. And in the 50s it must have be Deborah/Debra b/c ALL the Jennifers have moms named Deb or Debbie. LOL

I like the lady names myself, so I understand your plight. Well, not Pearl or Olga.

I like Adelle (and it’s other forms, Adele, Adeline, etc) nicknames could be Addie, or Della… I also have a borderline obsession with names that end it ‘a’ or ‘ah’ I love how that sounds. (Expect the previously mentioned Olga. Does nothing for me…)

(What? Oh? You weren’t looking for suggestions?? Oh…Uh–er *blush* I wasn’t suggesting–just commenting!)

ahem.

You’re allowed to eat Capt’n Crunch if you want. The Third Trimester Clause clearly states that.

Happy Anniversary!

Emma is out for us.

Names I like:
Octavia Joy

Lily Agnes

Agatha Rose

Laurel Agnes

Margaret/Margaretta

Lilliana

My other 3 girls all have classic old fashioned names ending in “ah”!

I love Lily Agnes, and I love Margaret (DH nixed that one for dd because he hates ‘Marge’). And happy anniversary! We will be twelve years this year as well, but Nov.

On the fire ants, you can try baking soda. My colleague discovered that you can kill fire ants in enclosed spaces (think utility boxes) with baking soda, but from a research standpoint, it is really hard to prove whether you have killed a hill out in the open, or simply made it move elsewhere. However, it’s probably worth a try. They are currently trying to figure out why baking soda kills fire ants, but not Argentines.

Come to think of it, boiling baking soda water might be interesting… :)

Okay, that last one about the names cracked me up–that’s exactly how my husband and I are!

We had that problem with boys names. Girls names were okay but we just didn’t agree on boys names.
