    Julia is One!

Julianna is one year old today!  Hard to believe it was a year ago that her Daddy had to catch her in the bathroom. She is still a little nursing piglet.  She wears a size 5 shoe.  Her favorite game is peek-a-boo, and her favorite toy is a ball.  Her favorite food ...

    The Healthy Indian Diet

I've been more and more interested in trying and making Indian food lately.  I make Mark Bittman's dal and even the neighbor kids like it.  But I don't know much about the cuisine and all of the recipes I've cooked actually come from old white guys (Bittman, and Andrew Weil.) Indian ...

Things I Learned This Week: Baby Wipes

by Milehimama on July 27, 2009

in Discombobulated Homekeeping 101,Laugh or Cry

* If you tell your children they cannot have another apple, and they get one anyway, they will try to hide the evidence.

* An apple core wrapped in a receiving blanket and left for a few days creates a stain that my laundry skills cannot remove.

* If you cloth diaper, you might as well make reuseable baby wipes, too.  It doesn’t create more laundry.

* Stained receiving blankets make really good baby wipes.

* Cutting receiving blankets with pinking shears does not prevent them from unraveling in the wash.  Zigzag stitching on the edges, though, probably will.

* There is a reason they make dust covers for sewing machines.young-girl-learning-to-sew-frontier-america

* If you use a reusable baby wipe to clean your sewing machine, you can’t sew that one up until it dries.

* No matter how tempted you are to start early in the morning because the baby is sleeping, go ahead and have that second cup of coffee first.  Trust me.

* Sewing with a two year old who loves to push buttons and turn knobs Is. Not. Fun.

* If you are sewing with a two year old, it’s not the time for an impromptu sewing lesson for the 8 year old.  Because she will swear off sewing forevermore, and then who’s going to make your tailored muu-muus when you’re in the old folks home?

* Making my own baby wipes will save us about $5 a week.

Thank goodness my supertalented sister in law offered to make a new baptism gown for fat little Alianna.  Otherwise, she’d be getting baptised in a pillowcase.  Cut with pinking shears.

Note: I picked this post for Conversion Diary’s carnival as a post that best represents my blog.  It’s about kids doing things they shouldn’t, saving money, doing things in a half baked way which is a particular talent of mine, and (hopefully) humor.  Which blog post do you think is a “definitive” post of Mama Says?  Which is a definitive post that embodies YOUR blog?

I agree. I make and sell these myself. I no longer need baby wipes but other people do. I serge my edges because I really prefer the finished edge but it doesn’t really matter. I think serged ones last longer but it’s all relative really. They are so inexpensive and they last so long anyways. I also make cloth tp – that’s where the real savings is. I think we’ve discussed this before.

It’s food for thought for a ton of money savings and for people who just really want to be more green.

I don’t have a serger, just a cheap Brother I got at WalMart 10 years ago for $100 or so. But it still has tons of stitch options and suits us for what we need… I’m not planning on home sewing all of our own clothes any time soon! I tried making the girls matching Christmas dresses 2 years ago and it was a disaster (got the bobbin tension fixed, turns out that was what the problem was!)

All good lessons to know! Hope you have a good day!

Very funny post!

A tension problem can cause a beginner to decide they never want to learn to sew — or a more seasoned seamstress to damage a machine… ask me how I know! Glad you got yours fixed!

By the way, worn out dishrags and washcloths also make excellent wipes.

I use cloth diapers too and I am with you when you say how much fun it is to sew with the children. When my 4 year old and my 18 month old were looking at the “new baby” I gave up sewing for awhile. I bought two bundles of inexpensive washcloths at a discount store and used those as my wipes. We still have them many years later. Even buying something will even out pretty quickly as those baby wipes are expensive. I also was worried about those chemicals being rubbed on the skin of an infant!

I’m sure sewing with a 2 year old who loves knobs and buttons is PLENTY of fun…for him!

Great idea to use cloth wipes for saving money, but having to edge cut up receiving blankets is more work than it’s worth. Just go to the dollar store and buy a big package of cheap washcloths instead. Save your old, stained receiving blankets for dust cloths and wonderful rags. I used my old cloth diapers for dust cloths for years after we no longer needed them as diapers.

I actually have about 50 cheapo washcloths. We use them instead of paper towels. However, I can’t get to the store right now, LOL! Also, with the blankies I don’t have to worry about mixing up the dishrags with the hiney wipes!
