Amazon and Pedophilia

in Amazon.com,In the News

It appears that the now-removed-without-a-peep child molestor instruction manual has been removed, but now Amazon.com is being scrutinized more closely.  And the results are disturbing.

MSNBC broke the story today about material images of young girls without clothing being sold on the US and some foreign Amazon.com sites.

As for Amazon — and Facebook, another current target of Marsh’s activism — he says free speech should not be the defense. “It’s not about First Amendment rights,” said Marsh. “It’s about what material a good corporate citizen should be making available to the public. And that’s the kind of decision Amazon should be making.”

Flatley is of like mind. “We’ve allowed kids to become sex objects and let a major retailer commercialize this stuff,” she told me. “These are real kids, and these instruments are doing them real harm.”

There are quite a few videos released by nudist groups that depict families including children and pubescent girls without clothes.  In fact when I was searching for this group, the coverboxes appeared with developed, underage girls – and it was not blurred out or censored, and I did not purchase (obviously) in order to view it.  There are videos of “playful families” with elementary aged children on the beach, getting massages, and doing yoga.

Amazon.com profits from videos like the nudist workout where “Over 50 pre-teen girls, teens, college girls and adult ladies turned out for a ‘girls-only’ day at the gym…A rollicking good time.”  Or “Preview” videos that clearly show unclothed elementary and middle school aged girls having a tug-of-war while adult males (also in the buff) watch in the background.  Again, images popped right up when the title was clicked.

There are photography books with photos taken at nudist beaches that were photographed by “controversial photographer [name redacted] who was cleared of pornography charges by the U.S. government.”  This guy’s work is barely legal and prosecutors thought they could win a pornography case against him.  Barnes and Noble actually had charges for child porn dropped after agreeing not to display this photgrapher’s work.

(Please note – the point of this is not whether such works are technically legal, but rather if we, as mothers, fathers, and citizens are willing to support a company that profits from explicit images of young children.)

And then there’s still the issue of profiting from pedophiliac literature – like this one:

There is still no response from Amazon.  They have not answered whether Mr. Greave’s book is permanently delisted, or whether policies have been put in place to prevent future books that encourage criminal activity against children from being published by Amazon Digital Services or put on their website.

The silence is deafening.

Amazon’s offerings in other countries are even worse.  Here’s a snippet from their Japan website {CLICK WARNING}, of young girls starring in their own videos.

You may notice the Boycott Amazon graphic I’ve used on some of my posts.  While I don’t agree with everything the group writes, they’ve put together a YouTube slide show that you may want to see… if you think this was just “an accident” or that Amazon just didn’t know about it, prepare to be informed. I’ve moved and reprinted some of the relevant content from the More Amazon post here, because I would like to gather all of the pedophilia/child abuse information in one place.

{ahem.  Please use caution when clicking through links on the following pages.  I post them so  you can see- and judge- for yourselves but they are NOT family friendly}

Amazon refuses to sell porn sells lots of porn, but only of women (they have their standards.)  However, the site lists quite a few books promoting pedophilia, child molestation, and encouraging ‘man boy love’.

I’ve discovered that Amazon sells books written by David Riegel, an 88 year old man whose body of work, while not instructing pedophiles in how to skirt the law, does aim to normalize and popularize “man-boy love”.

A quote from Mr. Riegel:

boys are portrayed as being universally harmed by any sexual contacts with older males, but the truth has been known and documented for decades thatthe real harm to these boys comes not from their willing sexual experimentations, but from society s “taboos” and inappropriate overreactions of parents, teachers, police, and judges. (emphasis mine) [We Were Not Abused]

…Expression of sexuality is only acceptable with the age appropriate understanding, encouragement, and consent of the boy involved. [Philosophy of Responsible Boy Love]

In other writings, David L. Riegel says that we must get rid of the terms “victim” “abuse” and “pedophilia” as “value-laden” when discussing s*xual activity between young boys and older men.  Riegel’s books are published by theSafeHaven Foundation Press, which means a “safe haven for men to molest boys”, not a safe haven for children.  Don’t be fooled by the name.

As a parent, should I give my business to a store that profits from normalizing pedophilia, molestation, and the harm of innocents?  Other bookstores seem to have been able to draw a line.  I’m not asking for stores to remove all of their inventory or make sure that there is nothing offensive in their stores.  The nature of our society and of literature is that there will be ideas that not everyone agrees with.  Amazon, though, seems to be a mainstream resource for pedophile books, manuals, and encouragement.

I’m spending my money elsewhere until Amazon addresses the issue head on, treats their customers with respect, and informs us of their official decision- confirming that Mr. Greave’s book is down permanently.

I have this book, Protecting the Gift, and it is an excellent overview of how parents can keep their children safe from predators.  Mr. DeBecker’s books (his first one, The Gift of Fear, is written for adults) are a must read for women and parents.  This isn’t an affiliate link, I get nothing if you click through or decide to order.

Additional resources for fighting pedophilia and child rape:

Family Watchdog lets you see if any convicted child molestors live near you

Rainn.org has links to get help for victims, and also information about what you can do to stop child sexual abuse.

Sadly, the exploitation and rape of children isn’t limited to America.  Mercy House Kenya uses the power of 3 to help young girls.  Do you have $3 a month?

UPDATE, NOV 19.

It’s been a week.  Amazon has removed David Reigel’s books – also without an apology, a notice, or any information about how long the books will be down.  They are still stonewalling the press.  However, the Japanese videos are still for sale, as is this book about how to take advantage of young boys in third world countries for sexual tourism.

I had already decided not to spend my Christmas dollars with Amazon this year once I saw them try to defend the pedophile book and refuse to take it down claiming rights to free speech. I haven’t changed my mind since they took it down. I usually spend over a thousand dollars every year just using Amazon. It’s going to be a pain in the ass this year NOT using Amazon but my mind is made up. I am done with them.

Thank you for this overview–I’ve been seeing information in drips and drabs. Amazon’s silence is deafening — I’d like to imagine them in some giant board room with several lawyers trying to revamp their self-published hosting policy, outlining guidelines on what they will/ will not sell, and maybe even putting in some measures to assure that minors don’t get to the adult content they choose to sell.

Sadly, though, they are probably in a meeting with lawyers, only the topic is how to best cover their behinds.

Thanks for the info on the helpful books– this whole thing has prompted me to talk more to my daughter about privacy, her body, etc.

The simple fact is, Amazon.com does not care about our families. Our kids. All they care about is their bottom line. They will do whatever it takes to increase it. I don’t know about anyone else here, but I just cannot support a company like that.

Thank you for stopping by my blog and leaving your opinion. I agree with you…it’s shocking that a private company would choose to promote this type of material. Thanks for all of the great info in this post.

Amazon.com has lost my business and my affiliate membership. I am getting behind a large Christian company soon, but Amazon is gone as of today! They have decided to allow the almighty $$$ be more important than the safety and well being of our most helpless citizens, children.

This makes me physically ill. I have “bought” a ton of stuff from Amazon this year because I’ve earned Amazon gift cards by taking surveys. I want to justify that it’s okay to continue because I want to say “Well, Amazon needs to see that there are people who are buying Christian books” (I just ordered Morning and Evening Devotions by Charles Spurgeon) but I can’t stomach it. I’ve looked into a few of my survey companies and I can redeem my points for Barnes and Noble gift cards, instead, so I’m switching to that. There is one company that only offers Amazon and I am going to contact them and ask them to offer something else. If not, I will discontinue business with them. I know this was unpleasant to have to write about, but I thank you for it.

I do have decided to no longer do business with Amazon…
That being said- I didn’t really find that video informative… I think it is so easy to use one sentence and take it out of context that I rarely trust when I hear a one second blurb from anyone. I know that it seems to prove the point that these guys have no morals, but it’d be nice to use cold hard facts rather than assumptions.

Milehimama November 13, 2010 at 4:22 pm

I thought the video was useful because it showed so many books that would be questionable. I don’t really care if Bezos says he’s ethical or not or if he goes against his own quotes or whatever – actions speak louder than words and the actions of his company – Amazon.com – are not what I want to support.

BTW- if anyone happens to look something up in my archives and sees a link to Amazon, would you mind just leaving a comment on that post “Amazon link” or something? I have over 400 posts and it’s going to take me a while to manually dig through them all. I wish there was a plugin or a program that I could check them all at once.

I don’t know what to say about this. This is just, awful.. No parents will allow this kind of thing will happen to their children.

Carrie November 15, 2010 at 5:21 pm

Here’s the thing – by allowing these types of materials to be available through their sites and anything they are affiliated with, Amazon is making it easy for these materials to get into the hands of people who mean harm to others.

And I do not condone that, not in any little way – no matter what freedoms are at risk. I’d rather protect those who need protecting than have these kinds of books and other media available so easily. Sure, they will exist w/out big conglomerates carrying them for consumption, but why would we, as a society, as a culture, as HUMAN BEINGS, want to just hand things like this over to someone who means to do harm?
