MMMMmmmm… chocolate cake. Still warm. Available anytime. Sounds delicious, but the sticker shock can be annoying.
You can make it yourself, at home, for a fraction of the cost. It’s so easy, a 5 year old could do it.

You’ll need
- A box of cake mix (most chocolate flavors are artificial color free, but if you are on a special diet, read the label!)
- Chocolate syrup, chocolate chips, frosting -what ever you like to make it special
- water
- small bowl or ramekin.
- Tablespoon
- Fork

1. Put 4 tablespoons of cake mix in a small bowl or ramekin. Add chocolate chips or nuts if you want to get fancy.
2. Add 2 tablespoons of water.

3. Mix with a fork until it looks like cake batter.
4. Microwave for 60 seconds.

5. Lick the fork while waiting.
6. If cake isn’t done, microwave a bit more in 10 second intervals. It’s done when there is a tiny wet spot in the middle (smaller than a penny). (Microwave times may very. If it’s too dry, microwave for 45 seconds next time. And oh, yes, you KNOW there’ll be a next time!)
Careful! It’s hot!

Yum! (And you have a ton of cake mix leftover to make more snacks, later!) Top with frosting, coconut, or whatever you like!

Great idea!
I cannot use this one due to our food allergies, but I bet that I COULD make ahead some cake or sweet bread mixes for the kiddos to use like this!
Birdie, I actually use this for Mr R when he can’t have the cake or treat that someone brought. He can’t have commercial frostings or food colors, so I make him his own!
This is a great idea. I keep forgetting to fix your link on my sidebar. Love the new look.
Genius! I am writing this down and making them for dessert tonight! Can I just say… “I love you!”
Hi. I was just surfing around some blogs, and I came across yours. It’s pretty nifty and I’m really enjoying my stay here. I’ve bookmarked your site for daily visits, and I hope you’ll visit me. I’d love to have you.
Have a great day and I’ll see you around the blogosphere.
I’ve made a few of these this week, and with some experimenting, here’s what we found:
1. Replace the water with milk. Much yummier than the water.
2. Depending on the cake mix, you might want to add a pinch of sugar. (I had Butter Pecan cake mix on hand.)
3. Most importantly – change your microwave time and lower the power. I found that 1 minute, 30 seconds on 60% power made it come out much better. It rises better so it’s lighter and fluffier.
Thanks for the great idea!
I’m addicted to these Betty Crocker warm delights, but at two dollars a bowl, this is so much cheaper, and they taste the same! thanks!!
I assume this is using a “just add water” cake mix? Can’t imagine it’s that good with out eggs and oil.
No, it’s just the basic cake mix off the shelf that you are supposed to add eggs and oil to. Although I always sub applesauce for the oil when I make it like a cake.
Oh heavens look out, you are my new bff for this post! I’m so going to share this with my readers who I just know are going to love this.
Just tried this recipe. I added chocolate chips and it only took 2 or 3 minutes to make. So awesome!!!!!
