We had a wonderful Christmas, though we postponed Christmas dinner a few days. We ate frozen meatballs and jarred spaghetti sauce on Christmas, instead!
On Wednesday, a few of the children started coughing – the deep, loud coughing. By Thursday Miss C (4) and Mr S (7) had fevers. Christmas morning, Mr P (10) woke us up to tell us he had a headache, sore throat, and felt nauseated.
Throughout Christmas morning, Mr P felt worse and worse, and had a high fever. No cough or runny nose – just a high fever and sore throat. I was pretty sure it was strep; sure enough, his tonsils were red, swollen, and covered in white spots. We ended up at the emergency room, since it was Christmas day.
He got a standard prescription – amoxicillan, but Walgreen’s was the only open pharmacy. I had to pay out of pocket – $23.99. I was pretty aggravated at paying full price – our Medicaid is still messed up despite several trips, phone calls, and getting an ombudsman involved. Also, WalMart, Target, and Kroger all have $4 drug programs which would have covered amoxicillan.
I snapped out of my snit fit pretty darn quick, though. We live in an amazing time, when life saving antibiotics can be had within 15 minutes for the price of Friday night pizza.
And there was never, ever a question in my mind about whether we would be able to see a doctor or if medicine would be available. America is a great country.
Mr P is recovering, slowly. Amazingly, this is his first round of antibiotics, ever (and only the second round of antibiotics for the kids in our family.) God has blessed us with abundant good health, and even the children’s high blood pressure seems to be benign.
When I was little, I had strep throat on Christmas and it was no fun at all. Say a quick prayer for Mr P if you think of him, please.

Prayers for everyone! Step is not a fun thing. We have had several times when it hit like that and thought it was the flu. Make sure you have everyone that can start gargling with salt water to keep it from spreading.
I hope the rest of the Christmas season settles down for you and your family.
Awwwww- I just hate it when the littles are sick like that. It makes one feel so helpless! I hope everyone is better quick.
That stinks. But, you’re right about how great it is to have access to life saving medication, on a holiday, within minutes.
As a kid, I had Strep a lot – so often for a couple years that there was a standing prescription tat the pharmacy. I remember it all too well and hope your Mr. P gets over it quickly and easily.
Enjoy your dinner when you have it.
