This post if for nursing mamas.  So, uh, Dad, you might just want to wait for the next post, mkay?

I have nursed nine babies, and I get excruciating cracked nipples every.single.time.  I’ve seen lactation consultants and been to La Leche League meetings, and have made peace with the fact that this is just how I am.

I’m very fair, so fair you can see my veins through my skin at twenty paces which is really only a benefit if you are a professional bodybuilder, which I certainly am not.

I’ve tried many and varied home remedies, but the one that works the best, hands down, is coconut oil.  I just keep a little dish nearby and after baby eats rub a bit in.  Coconut oil is solid at room temperature but melts at body temperature.  It works better than any of the special creams, lanolin, or anything else I’ve tried.

A bonus is that coconut oil is harmless and perfectly fine for baby, if there’s some residue left when it’s time for another nursing session.  It’s worry free, easily available, and cheap.

You can find coconut oil at the grocery store, usually by the specialty or olive oils and also it’s carried in the health food departments of the bigger stores.
