40 Days of Soup

I have a new project to share with you.

During Lent, I’ll be posting 40 Days of Soups.  We’ll have recipes, and also techniques and tips.

Why soup?

Soup is economical- it’s a great way to make inexpensive ingredients like beans taste good, and you can make soup out of things you’d normally throw away, like bones.

Soup is filling – it’s a good diet food if you are trying to lose weight and a good way to stretch meager ingredients.

Soup is comforting – it’s like a bowlful of home.  Warm and cheery for dreary days, or it can be cool and refreshing for hot ones.

Soup is healing – Chicken Noodle Soup has been shown to help cure the common cold. It’s a good meal for delicate stomachs, the elderly, young children, or people who can’t chew.  It’s also a perfect vehicle for healing spices and herbs, such as onion, garlic, turmeric, and ginger.

Soup is basic – it’s easy to make, it’s not fancy, and it’s a good choice for Lent when Catholics give up meat, practice fasting and abstinence, and generally live in a more simple, penitential way.

Not that eating soup is a penance.  No, no, no!  Soup is delicious.  And it can be a super quick emergency meal.

Every adult (that’s you!) should know how to feed themselves.  Soup provides a tasty, easy way to feed yourself well.

I’ll be featuring guest posts from some of my favorite bloggers, and in a couple of weeks we’ll have a Linky so you can share your favorite soup recipes, too!

Now, as we get started, is there anything you want to know about soup?  Do you want to know how to make a good bone broth, or consomme, or what the heck mirepoix is?  Let me know your soupy questions!
