Miss C: Can I take a bath? (The girl thinks she is a mermaid who requires 3 baths per day, and it is half an hour before dinner time)
Me: No
Miss C: Why not?
Me: Because I’m mean (irrefutable and cannot be argued with.)
Miss C: No, your not. Well, sometimes.
Thanks, kid.

I just have to write about this amazing coincidence.
On Tuesday, Aug. 24, the King Street Patriots (the Houston Tea Party group) announced that volunteers had found thousands of inaccurate and false voter registrations, alleged fraud, and held a press conference. They called for an investigation into voting in Harris County, which includes the city of Houston.
I know these people, and they are working with True The Vote to check all registrations. After they started, ACORN moved their offices down the street, which cracked me up.
On Thursday night, there was a mysterious fire at the warehouse containing ALL of the voting equipment for the whole entire county. It burned to the ground and all of the voting machines are a total loss – just two months out from the election.
Amazing coincidence, right? Of all the warehouses in all the city, that one goes up in smoke.

Mr R has been in fifth grade since last Monday. Within days I was getting calls from the office. His crime? He WALKED TO SCHOOL. Oh my.
Apparently it is against district policy because they think the street by the school is too busy. It’s a two lane road, but it has a stripe down the middle and there is a crossing guard in the morning. Mr R is 12 years old. We live 1/4 mile from the school. If he wants to walk, IMO, I am not going to stop him. He doesn’t like getting teased by the girls on the schoolbus.
I told the school that he has my permission to walk, and unless they were going to expel him or bar the door and refuse him entry, he may or may not be walking to school in the future. She didn’t know what to say about that. All she could repeat was that it’s against district policy (so what, I care why?) We agreed to let the counselor talk to him about safety.

Mrs C homeschools her autistic sons. She writes about those Christian health-insurance buy in plans that are supposed to replace traditonal insurance, and pretty much sums up why we’ll never join. It’s not really about bearing one another’s burden, it’s about health elitism.

Interesting post at Casual Kitchen – The Economics of Wasteful Foods. He makes a point similar to one I showed in my How to Make Cream Soup post, which is that some processed foods are actually inferior and should be cheaper than their real-food counterpart because they taste worse and don’t have as much nutrition.

Is there a pumpkin shortage? Last year I heard there was a shortage, so I stocked up (WAY up, I still have about 6 cans.) There never really was a shortage. But this year, I was pricing a recipe for this blog and I couldn’t find plain old canned pumpkin. All I could find at my store was pumpkin pie mix or organic pumpkin. Have you noticed a shortage? Should I stock up on Libby’s, hoping it goes up and I get in on the bubble, like Beanie Babies?

I’m working as a curator for BlissReads. This is a site that uses human filters/curators to find the best blog posts on the web in a certain category, because there are so many blogs that it’s impossible to keep up on your own. If you’re looking for the cream of the crop content, check it out!
I’m curating the Baby, Kids, Home, and Humor channels. Please tell me your favorite blogs about family fun, kid activities, baby/pregnancy, or funny sites!

Oh my goodness, thank you so much for mentioning the pumpkin shortage! I hadn’t heard of this at all, but haven’t been able to find pumpkin in the grocery stores in months! I thought maybe they were only going to carry it around Thanksgiving time. I’m so glad to know it’s not just me – and I will definitely be stocking up!
And if kids aren’t allowed to walk to school, why would there be a crossing guard? That doesn’t make any sense.
A couple of years ago, I bought pumpkins cheap the day after Halloween, roasted them, and froze the puree. Worked for me! One jack-o-lantern pumpkin makes a crazy amount of pumpkin puree. One can is about 2 cups so that’s how I froze it, in 2 c. portions. I think I’ll have to do that again this year!
#3–Heaven forbid that he walk. Good for you.
Seriously, it seems to me that the institutions in our culture are determined to hold up as many conflicting ideals and goals as possible, making ALL of them impossible. For instance: we need to exercise more, drive less–but Heaven forbid that a kid cross a street! Agh!
It’s frustrating to hear SO much about childhood obesity, and then the school discourages walking and takes away recess time as punishment. Double standard, anyone?
wow. ACORN still in business? I thought they got shut down.
Last year in Colorado there were several devastating hailstorms that wiped out most of the pumpkins. IDK about the rest of the country. Colorado is the cantaloupe capital of the world as well as the second largest producer of potatoes in the USA. Dont know how much pumpkins we produce but there were very few for the halloween traditions. And they were quite pricey too.
Oh. I am a mean mom too. Biggest co.plaint around here is that I wont allow my nuggets to climb a tree or even play outside if there is a thunderstorm near. According to them there is no danger unless its actually raining.
It may not have been acorn now that I’m thinking about – I’m trying to recall. I will look into it. I know that one group did move right down the road from King Street Patriots, but I’ll check on WHO exactly it was.
Wanna see some of those voter registrations?

Houston Votes, which is basically ACORN reincarnated and run by an SEIU guy, is countersuing Leo Vasquez (who is in charge of voter registrations) calling him a political hack.
I personally know some people who did the checking up. They viewed the applications, and in some cases actually visited the addresses listed – finding abandoned propertys, empty lots, and even dead people on the rolls. In TX, a registered voter has to be the one to challenge a possibly fraudulent voter registration, and these people all signed affidavits asking the registrar to investigate. So it’s not actually Leo Vasquez out on a witch hunt – private citizens swore affidavits requiring him to look into matters.
#4, I just had to read the article and then go search more about this. It’s crazy. Routine tests are not covered unless you are showing symptoms. So if I were to have this insurance I wouldn’t be able to get tested for breast cancer even though it runs in the family if I didn’t show any symptoms even though the earlier its found the better. CRAZY!!!!!! Not going to try to get that insurance.
Well, yeah. Here’s from Medi-Share, one of the bigger ones.
http://mychristiancare.org/medi-share/
It says ” Medi-Share is for Christians who want their healthcare dollars to help fellow believers who are living the same lifestyles they are, based on biblical principles and service to others. ”
What’s not covered:
Elderly (over 65)
Not living a Christian lifestyle, as determined by the Lifestyle Police at Medishare (includes participating in dangerous activities, so I guess if you pull a muscle during karate class or twist your ankle while skiing you are out of luck.)
Congenital birth defects (unless you were born while covered under the plan). So, if they find a heart problem in your child at age 2 or genetic disorder that shows up during puberty, SOL.
Hearing Aids (sad. I had a friend growing up, a kid, who had hearing aids. See how they don’t care for elderly people, above.)
Mental health (don’t get postpartum depression, whatever you do. And don’t be born with a biological neuro disorder, either.)
Pap smears, colonoscopy, preventative tests. Guessing this would be a diabetes screening test, unless you were already having severe issues from it. Wonder if that covers blood pressure tests, the silent killer with few symptoms?)
Weight management or control (doubt you’re accepted if you’re fat, and if you are, they won’t help you)
Special needs services (don’t have a kid who needs occupational or speech therapy).
In short, be of sound mind and body, don’t do anything dangerous, and don’t get recommended screenings. Then you’re in like Flynn!
Regarding #7-uh, here?
Sometimes you can find some really great deals on pumpkins are farmer’s markets near Halloween time. I actually prefer cooking up my own pumpkin puree. I get so MUCH that way!
