Make Your Bed the Lazy Way

I am not a bed maker.  I fall into the “why bother we’re just going to sleep in it again” camp.  However, a made bed is nicer to slip into at night, and it does make the room look neater.  It transforms the look of my bedroom from “halfway house” to “sure does look nice under all those piles of laundry”.   Kind of.

I am also lazy.  I’m not one to roll out my pie dough because that’s the proper way to do it.  And if I can’t even be bothered for pie, I certainly am not going to make a herculean effort for my sheets.  (And oh, I am not a morning person.  It really is herculean to me!)

So I make my bed the lazy way.  I got the idea from Heloise’s column in Good Housekeeping several years ago.  Make the bed while you are still in it, before you ever get up.

Grab the sheet and comforter, then kick it straight with your legs.  Swing your feet over to your husband’s side to smooth the sheets a bit.  When everything is more or less straight, slip out the side and fluff the pillows.

Perfect hospital corners?  No.  But it works for me!

  1. When I was in high school I slept in a sleeping bad on top of my made-up bed. Every morning I got out of the sleeping bag, rolled it up and put it in my closet and enjoyed my already made bed :)

  2. I always start housecleaning with making the bed. Its the biggest thing in the room, so its the most dramatic transformation I can make in 5 minutes. Anyway, thats where I do all of my laundry sorting and folding, which is the second thing I do when I clean house.

  3. Ha ha!!!! This cracked me up!!! But in a way it does make a lot of sense. And I’m with you…a lazy bed-maker all the way! ;)

  4. Every morning the beds are made with dad’s assistance and many stories about National Service. Every day is the same routine as dad has had Alzheimer’s for a while now and order is required to keep him on track. He has finally relaxed about the bouncing coin thing though.

  5. Comments for your commenters:

Becky – aarrrrgh! My 12 year old does that. Last night, in fact!

Mary Alice – yes, and then the laundry that lands on the bed MUST get folded and put away BEFORE we go back to bed tonight, right? (In theory, anyway!)

Suze – oh, cute…I’m glad, for the sake of all of you, that the bouncing coin isn’t a big issue anymore. So sorry your household is coping with Alzheimers.
