Food Stamp Challenge week 38

Wow, thanks for all of your encouraging responses in Friday’s Quick Takes post!  I really appreciate the support of my Bloggy Buddies.  Sometimes it’s hard to admit things, but I also want to keep it real.  It’s a fine line.  Thanks, guys!

And now I’ll shamelessly plug my Examiner.com site:  First Day of Fall, 2009!  I link to an equinox experiment, video of the serpent creeping up the stairs at Chichen Itza, and a good explanation of Ember Days.

I’m waiting to turn the application in until I pay the rent.  I don’t know if the Health and Human Services employee assigned to my case will have enough common sense to know that I’m not actually rich and all those dollars in my bank account are spoken for by the landlord already.

So.  I failed miserably, again.  I didn’t keep my receipts.  I didn’t buy much food, but I did run to the store a few times for $5 here and $10 there, mostly for bread, fruit, and milk.  I know what I spent, but I don’t recall precisely what I spent it on!

Seriously, this post-partum brain is going to do me in.  I took my glasses off last Friday for a split second, to put a ponytail in, and they were lost for hours.  (No, they weren’t on my head, they were on the cable modem in the playroom because, hey, that makes sense).

I spent $11 on food at the 99 cents store, $9 on food at FoodTown, and $8 at Kroger.  I do remember what I bought at Kroger, and it’s embarrassing.  It was one of those midnight food runs, always bad for the pocketbook, and I got ice cream, frozen waffles (shocking! And my homemade ones really ARE better.), a box of cereal, and 7-Up.  Husband dear is sick and his vice is 7-Up.  My vice is cereal.  I lurrrvve me some cereal.

So, $28 as we continued to eat out of the pantry.  I have plenty of meat in the freezer, too, and I predict more light spending this week as I <s>jealously hoard</s> be a good steward of our resources.

I will be hitting the store for milk and more fruit.  Always with the fruit!

Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday are Ember Days, a day of fast and partial abstinence for Catholics.  They are observed four times a year (see Zach. 8:19) at the change of the seasons.  However, since I’m the only adult Catholic in my household and I’m nursing, I’m just going to plan meatless meals for those days.

This week, we’re eating: edited to reflect what we actually made!

Monday, Sept. 20 – Gingered beef, calabacitas, barley pilaf

Tuesday, Sept. 21 -clam spaghetti, salad

Wednesday, Sept. 22 – chicken fried rice

Thursday, Sept. 23 – charro beans, corn tortillas, froz. veggies

Friday, Sept. 24 – Lentil sloppy joes, salad

Saturday, Sept. 25 – Chicken with green chile cheese sauce, rice, pintos

  1. I took a look at your Examiner piece. Very interesting and brilliant stuff about Ember days, I had no idea!
That Fisheaters link is excellent, thank you.

BTW, do you have these recipes anywhere? And what are ‘calabacitas’?

  2. Calabacitas are a type of Mexican squash. They’re just like fat zucchini (courgettes!), but they are usually about half the price.

Some time ago you recommended a book to me. I thought I had saved it in my Amazon wishlist but hadn’t.
    Would
    this be it?

If not, any idea which it was?
Sorry. Totally off topic I know, but it’s been bugging me lately!

  6. YES that’s it, I love that book!

That is, if the book recommendation was about encouragement/sanctification of homemakers, and not, say, a rec for a good sci-fi read.

  11. I can only put my glasses on my bedstand. I just know how easily I lose things and how poorly I see. Sometimes I need help if I knock them off onto the floor, but I think that’s more my vision.
