Is that what you mean, or were they green, like moldy rotten? I've noticed it varied based on brands. When we lived in South Carolina, my husband, FIL, and boys brought fresh clams home but now I'm back to canned. I basically just make a white sauce, add clam juice from the can and garlic, then stir the clams in at the end. Some clams have green edges as part of their natural coloring.
